The Peele host special 105th Birthday Celebration

A special celebration was held yesterday at The Peele Care Home in Manchester, as a person we support, Irene Stevenson, celebrated her 105th birthday. Irene turns 105

Born on January 9th, 1914, Irene celebrated her fifth year of being a centenarian with a huge tea party that took place at the home, located in Wythenshawe. Irene was surrounded by her family, friends and fellow residents at The Peele, who all got together to make it an extraordinary day to remember.

With sweet treats and birthday cakes in abundance, the room was decorated with personalised balloons celebrating Irene’s special day. Guests were entertained by a local ukulele player, who serenaded them with a few of their favourite songs, with some dance moves breaking out by both our colleagues and the people we support!

Having lived through two world wars and 25 Prime Ministers, Irene has now received not one, but two incredible birthday messages from the Queen, which were proudly placed in front of Irene throughout the party. When Irene was born in 1914, George V was on the throne and that year saw the beginning of the First World War. Living in Manchester since she was 18, Irene is now one of the oldest people in the region.

Irene’s son, Peter, commented, “After being diagnosed with angina in her 50s and told she only had a few years left to live, it really is extraordinary that Mum is here today! I’d like to thank The Peele for pulling out all the stops to celebrate Mum’s special day. They’ve organised this whole party, and to see the thought and effort they have put into it is really overwhelming.”

Paul Allam, General Manager at The Peele, commented “As our second-oldest resident at The Peele it was important that we all got together today to celebrate such a special lady! Irene is a wonderful person, so we wanted to celebrate in style by throwing her this birthday party that none of us will forget. It really is fantastic to see all of the people we support having such a great day together.”Irene with family

And finally, to answer the question on everyone’s lips – we asked Irene what her secret is! On Irene’s behalf, her son Peter confirmed that it was her family who has kept her strong for all these years, and her love for her him, her two grandchildren and her great-granddaughter is what has got her here today!
