Celebrating Black History Month

Throughout October, our charity has marked Black History Month 2020 by celebrating and recognising our Black colleagues and the people we support – all whilst showcasing the diversity of Community Integrated Care.

We kicked off the special month by asking our colleagues to share a Black person who had impacted them at some point in their lives and received an overwhelming response. From Nelson Mandela and Michelle Obama, to personal accounts of our colleagues’ family members, the stories were truly inspirational to read.

Throughout the month we also shined a spotlight on the key achievements of Black people across our organisation, from colleagues who have achieved award successes to those who have accomplished career developments.

We also received help from our sporting and community partners to celebrate the month who created a special schedule of online activity sessions for the people we support and our colleague’s children inspired by Black history and culture

Firstly, our partners at Portsmouth Football Club held a special cookery session, with Chef Duke teaching the people we support to cook Jerk Chicken with Rice, whilst talking about the significance of the dish in Jamaica and what it meant to him growing up. Our friends at The Bluecoat rounded off the sessions off by holding an inspiring session on Liverpool Black Artists.

As a finale to an incredible month, we were delighted to see our colleagues in Leicester hold their own virtual movie night showing the groundbreaking film, Black Panther. Tuning into together, the team watched the film in memory of the star, Chadwick Boseman, marking 2 months since his passing.

Throughout the month our colleagues, people supported, and partners have truly helped us highlight how diverse our charity is.
