We support Cost of Inaction report

Community Integrated Care is proud to support the Health and Social Care Select Committee’s report Adult Social Care Reform: the cost of inaction, published on Monday 5th May.

The report stresses the need for Government to measure and fully understand the true cost of inaction on social care in order to present a robust, financial case for reforms of social care system, saying, “without this we fear that the reforms that come out of the Casey Commission will be doomed to failure, leaving everyone continuing to suffer under the current unsustainable system.”

It also highlights how social care is an integral part of the government’s NHS reforms, with the two being interlinked, and how investment in the social care system could help drive economic growth.

Community Integrated Care contributed to the report through a number of engagement activities, including submitting written evidence to the consultation, which has been cited within the report, and taking part in roundtables with the Select Committee to share insights and firsthand experience.

Within our charity’s consultation response, we highlighted the impact of previous inaction to reform the social care system including health inequalities among people with learning disabilities; the low pay of the care workforce, the financial sustainability of care provider organisations; the performance of the NHS which relies on social care for its success; and the missed opportunity for economic growth.

We also shared a series of suggestions for action to be taken in the future to improve the social care system, particularly with regard to the needs of adults with learning disabilities.

Our Chief Corporate Services & People Officer, Teresa Exelby, and Managing Director, Edd Terrey, took part in the Select Committee’s Adult Social Care Roundtables in March, alongside colleagues from across the social care sector, sharing vital insights and experience to support in shaping the report.
