Our Response to Baroness Casey’s Remarks On ASC

Community Integrated Care has responded to Baroness Louise Casey’s remarks at last week’s Nuffield Trust Summit, where she set out early reflections on the state of adult social care, in her role as Chair of the Casey Commission. Jim Kane, Chief Executive Officer at Community Integrated Care, said:

“Baroness Casey has said what many of us have long known: adult social care is underfunded, undervalued, and too often overlooked in national policy. The structural challenges she described mean too many people still face barriers to accessing the right care and support at the right time, in a system that drives fragmentation and short-term decision making, creating instability for those who rely on support.”

“At its best, adult social care enables people to live independently, safely, and with purpose. It supports families, strengthens communities, and plays a vital role in reducing pressure on the NHS and other public services. Yet it remains too often undervalued in policy, under-recognised in public debate, and under-resourced in practice.”

“As the Commission’s work develops, it will be vital that this honesty is matched by practical reform; sustainable funding, better commissioning, and proper recognition for the workforce. Change must work for people with learning disabilities and autistic people, as well as older people, and be shaped by their lives, aspirations, and rights.”

“We look forward to working constructively with Baroness Casey, government, and partners to help build a system that is fairer, more sustainable, and fit for the future.”
