Mhairi recognised for 20 years at Girlguiding
This week is Volunteers’ Week and we’re delighted to shine a light on Mhairi, a person we support from Aberdeenshire, who has been recognised for an incredible 20 years of service with Girlguiding.
Mhairi began her journey with Girlguiding at a young age, first attending Rainbows then progressing through to Brownies and Guides. Being part of the groups has enabled her to develop skills, confidence and a sense of belonging. Now she’s a dedicated Rainbows Leader, giving back to the community and supporting her local Rainbows unit, volunteering her time each week.
Within her role, Mhairi works alongside other volunteers, supporting with running weekly meetings and facilitating fun and educational activities for girls aged 4-7. This ranges from games, science experiments and baking, to outdoor adventures, team-building activities and even fundraising. Her commitment, enthusiasm and positivity have made a lasting impact on her local Rainbows unit.
Reflecting on her journey, Mhairi said, “Reaching 20 years with Girlguiding is a wonderful achievement. It’s been such a big part of my life, from when my Mum first took me to Rainbows as a young girl – it was called Butterflies then. Now as a leader, I love working with children and helping them learn new skills too. I have so many lovely memories – from making lifelong friends, fundraising, baking, and going on exciting adventures. One of my favourite memories was hosting a Christmas Party for the Rainbows last year. We did a movie night where we watched the Grinch with sweet treats and even had a special visit from Santa Claus! I love being part of this community, it has brought me so much happiness and I’m really proud of everything I have achieved with Girlguiding.”
Service Leader, Joanne Slessor, said, “I am extremely proud of Mhairi for dedicating 20 years to Rainbows. I’ve known her since she first joined as a little girl, and it’s been a joy to watch her journey. She brings such joy and warmth to everything she does. Watching her grow and support others with such passion and kindness has been a privilege. She’s a true role model.”
