Matthew’s Journey to Independence

Matthew is supported by Community Integrated Care in Leicester. This story has been developed through meaningful conversations with his care managers and support team, and written consent has been obtained for sharing.

A difficult starting point

When Matthew arrived at our transitional supported living service, Evesham House, nearly three years ago, he was facing extremely challenging circumstances. Where he had previously been living hadn’t been suitable for his health, wellbeing, or support needs and he had very few personal belongings. Matthew was ready for change but unsure of what independence could look like.

As someone living with a learning disability and muscular dystrophy, he had become disengaged from daily life in his previous living circumstances.

A new beginning

From day one at Evesham House, Matthew was supported to settle in with dignity and comfort. With support from the team, he created a space that felt like his own. He began working with the team to build core daily living skills, including cooking, cleaning, budgeting, and personal care. Initially, he needed full support in all areas of his daily life, but gradually, Matthews confidence began to grow.

Over time, he was able to independently manage his routines and took pride in himself and his space.

Moving on to independence – a dream come true

Now, Matthew is preparing to move into his own flat – something he’s dreamed of for years. He’s taken the lead in choosing his own furniture and home essentials, in a space he can truly call his own.

To support his transition, Matthew will continue to receive tailored 1:1 support for tasks like shopping and cooking. This will gradually reduce as he grows in confidence. His new home offers the perfect balance of independence with support nearby if needed.
