England star inspires on What To Do

Liverpool FC Women’s star, Gemma Bonner, joined Community Integrated Care in a special session on What To Do, to inspire people with learning disabilities and autism to find confidence and explore their passions, ahead the FIFA Women’s World Cup 2023.

In an exclusive session with people supported by our charity and other participants on What To Do, Gemma shared tips on finding self-belief with a look back at her career, and the importance of trying new things. Through a Q&A and exercise including a ‘World Cup Warm Up’, this aimed to build excitement ahead of the Lionesses’ first game at the tournament against Haiti on Saturday 22 July.

Sharing her experiences from an outstanding career that has seen her represent the Lionesses, Manchester City and Liverpool FC, her broadcasting work in media, and insights into stars to watch out for at the World Cup, Gemma’s footballing memories and knowledge inspired participants to set their own goals for the future, from finding new hobbies to joining a local sports team.

Gemma said, “I was delighted to support Community Integrated Care’s work in enabling people with learning disabilities to live their best lives possible. Their What To Do website is so impressive and such a valuable resource for anyone who accesses social care.”

“We had brilliant chats about finding confidence, the benefits of trying new things and the importance of having people around you that support you – such as your team mates. I learned a lot too and was thrilled to hear that many more people will be tuning in to watch the World Cup and cheer on the Lionesses.”

Lewis Webster, Sports Inclusion Communications Manager at Community Integrated Care, witnessed the value that Gemma’s inspiration brought to the group, saying, “We can’t thank Gemma enough for sharing her story, from first kicking a ball as a child, to going on to represent her country, Gemma gave participants an insight into the highs and lower points of her career, and how even the smallest improvements and changes you make in life can have a massive difference.”

“She engaged amazingly with people we support, taking the time to relate her successes and find ways for the participants to find their own, now matter how big or small, which really helped the group consider their own dreams and aspirations. A leader on and off the pitch that aligns with our charity’s values, we’re immensely proud to have Gemma’s support.”
