Celebrating Black History Month 2021

Throughout October weve been celebrating black voices from across our charity, marking Black History Month 2021.

Whilst black history is something to be recognised every month, we’ve been proud to showcase the diversity of Community Integrated Care, shining a light on our black colleagues and people we support.

This year’s Black History Month theme was named ‘Proud to Be’, which saw many of our people share proud moments from both their own history and the lives of iconic Black voices, such as Martin Luther King and UK rap artist, Dave.

We kicked off the month by shining a spotlight on our colleagues through a series of case study videos, quote cards and personal messages. Highlights included our Service Leader Gillian Edwards sharing a quote from the late, great Martin Luther King Jr, and our Managing Director of Central Candice York speaking about her pride of Black British Music.

We were also delighted to hear from the people we support who, thanks to the assistance from our arts, cultural and sporting partnerships, took part in Black History Month themed activities. Our ‘What To Do’ activity programme saw a special Creativity Club, where participants got crafty with images of iconic black figures, and a interactive Disco which celebrated Motown, Soul, Pop and Rap classics with one of the UK’s coolest producers, Nutty P!

In one of these special sessions, we were proud to be joined by RLWC Inclusive Volunteer, and black Learning Disability Super League player, Aaron Senior. Aaron shared how he and many others have been inspired by black players in rugby league and spoke on how their involvement in the sport has led to the growth in rugby league for many other groups, promoting social inclusion for all.

We’ve been incredibly proud our colleagues, the people we support and partners who have gone above and beyond to help us celebrate Black History Month throughout October!
