We Respond To The Covid Inquiry Module 6 Report
Community Integrated Care has responded to the publication of the Covid-19 Inquiry’s Module 6 report, which examines the impact of the pandemic on the adult social care sector.
We welcome the opportunity to reflect on the experiences of social care during the pandemic and ensure lessons are learned for the future, while highlighting the importance of recognising the full breadth of the sector.
As one of Britain’s largest social care charities, we support people with a range of care and support needs across England and Scotland, including people with learning disabilities, autistic people and people with complex care needs.
Responding to the report, Jim Kane, Chief Executive Officer of Community Integrated Care, said: “The Covid-19 Inquiry’s Module 6 report is an important moment to reflect on the experiences of social care during one of the most challenging periods in its history, and to ensure the lessons of the pandemic are learned.”
“The report also reinforces a longstanding issue: that for too long, social care has been undervalued and underrepresented in our national conversation, with the true breadth and impact of our sector too often overlooked. Social care extends far beyond care homes, supporting people of all ages, including people with learning disabilities, autistic people and those with complex care needs, to live independently in their own homes and communities. It’s vital that, in reflecting on the pandemic, we do not lose sight of the experiences of these people, their families and loved ones, many of whose lives were profoundly affected.”
“As Government considers the Inquiry’s recommendations, we have an opportunity not simply to prepare better for any future crisis, but to build a stronger future for social care. That means ensuring social care has a more prominent voice in national decision-making, properly recognising and rewarding its workforce, and creating a system that truly values the people who draw on and deliver support.”
