Transformational Support

Robert is a person supported by Community Integrated Care in Perth. This case study is told from his point of view, and the information captured has been retrieved through meaningful conversations with Robert and the people closest to him, such as family, care managers and his support team.

Robert is a big fan of sports like snooker and foot golf – a fun, accessible twist on golf! After sustaining an Acquired Brain Injury, he relied on walking aids for mobility, but that hasn’t slowed him down. A former tree surgeon, Robert has always loved the outdoors and still channels his passion through woodworking and time spent in nature.

Robert’s Background

In 2017, Robert was diagnosed with an Acquired Brain Injury following a heart attack, which left him with limited mobility and a loss of independence. After a year in hospital, he moved into his own home in Perth and experienced several care providers before finding the right fit. In August 2022, Community Integrated Care started to support Robert, and he has since felt a real positive change. The team understood his goals and built a strong relationship with his sister, an important part of his support network.

Learning to Walk Again

Regaining his mobility and independence was one of Robert’s biggest goals, and from day one, his support team was fully behind him. He initially relied on walking aids and daily help with tasks like cooking and cleaning, but 2023, the team helped him access Move Forward, a rehabilitation clinic in Elgin. With regular physio and daily exercises supported by his team, he no longer needed walking aids. Motivated and encouraged every step of the way, Robert is now walking with renewed confidence.

A New Lease of Life

Robert now goes to the gym five days a week and has achieved his goal of walking unaided. He’s discovered new activities like yoga, aerobics, and tai chi, all contributing to significant improvements in his health. He’s also active in community groups like Andy’s Man Club and Perth’s Men Shed, where he practices woodworking and meets new people. Robert’s life is busier than ever, and his confidence has soared. He’s regained independence, cooking meals and managing the housework with ease.

His family is amazed by his progress, and he’s incredibly grateful to his team for their dedication, helping him live a full, happy, and active life.
